    is it possible to create a dropdown menu for past events, sorted by year?

    This is not possible (yet). A workaround would be to create your own template page for this and either call the API functions of EME or use the shortcodes.

    can i do this with normal links? e.g. 2011 ?

    you can use multiple shortcodesw on one page, and limit the events shown per shortcode to that year
