How to use shortcodes

I must be missing something really simple. I want to customise my events list so I want to use something list this:

[events_list limit=0 showperiod=monthly]

Im not exactly sure WHERE Im supposed to use these shortcodes though. If I go to the settings page and add this to the area for the default events list it simply adds it as text to my events list. If I add PHP here then it gets commented out. (Not surprising really).

Do I have to add this directly to the .php page and if so which one should I edit?

Create a normal page in wordpress and add the shortcode to the content of it.
