Make an attribute field to be mandatory in the frontend form

I have an attribute field which I want to make mandatory.

Is there a way to make this, and how do I display the error if the user forgot to fill it out? I would like this option to be similar to the default Event name field.

Requiring a field will force the browser to show the field itself needing to be filled out, so no error text is needed.
