Private events only viewable for certain roles?

Hello,

I would like to have private events not be viewable by subscribers, only authors and up. I asked about this on wordpress forums and someone said to use a filter but I’m afraid I don’t know what to put in the filter. I’m assuming I can do this in my functions.php though, filter private events by user role. How would I do this?
