    Franky,

I am testing the setup of a gmail email acct for my client. Until now I’ve been using my personal email and it’s been working perfectly. With the new gmail info I get the following error when I submit a booking:

The website encountered an error while retrieving “http://bowercenter.org/testsite/events/1145/arts-lecture-series/?#eme-rsvp-message. It may be down for maintenance or configured incorrectly.

    Here are some suggestions:

    Reload this webpage later.

HTTP Error 500 (Internal Server Error): An unexpected condition was encountered while the server was attempting to fulfill the request.”

I have searched the forum and followed what advice I found (mainly the 465 port), plus read what I could find on gmail.com. Obviously I’ve missed something, but for the moment I have absolutely no idea WHAT… I am stuck! Help!

OK. I just don’t want to admit how long it’s taken me to figure this out. I did find a very similar post on here that ALMOST worked for me, but not quite. So I kept at it… I think I have now tried every possible configuration between gmail and EME. 🙁

Here’s what FINALLY worked (just in case anyone else has this issue):

    EME settings…

Notification sender address: the gmail email address

Mail sending method: PHP mail function

    Port: 465

    Gmail settings…

    enable POP

    Voila.

The only good thing I can think of right now is that you have one less post to deal with. 🙂

Yes… I read so many things… in so many places. 🙂

The SMTP authentication didn’t work… no idea why, since both gmail and my webhost suggested it.

Gmail suggested IMAP over POP.. that didn’t work.

My last desperate move was to switch to the PHP mail (I think that idea came from a post on your forum?) and suddenly emails were flying…

I didn’t try changing anything else after that. Perhaps a different port would work, but I was really frustrated and ready to accept success!

Do you think something about my current setup will cause me a problem?

Ok, more awake now: “Internal Server Error” means something wrong at your end of the server, maybe some ssl library of php not installed?

POP or imap is used to retrieve mail, not send it. So that for sure won’t change anything since my code doesn’t do pop or imap.

I’ll try the gmail setup here again and let you know.

    Franky,

Thanks for your attention to this matter. Based on your response, I decided to give this another go yesterday…

First – indeed, the POP/iMAP option shouldn’t apply, and after a 2nd test – didn’t! I was obviously TIRED and confused by the time I went thru so many iterations initially?

Second – I reluctantly contacted my webhost yesterday… submitted a problem ticket rather than call (because of previous bad experiences). Despite getting a ‘thank you for submitting your request’ from the website once, then twice, the ticket(s) never actually got recorded. So I called.

After 15 minutes talking to a person who clearly was incapable of helping me, she said – call this # and a ‘more technical’ person will be able to help you. I called that #, and guess who answered? The same person I’d just been talking to. I’m not making this up!

Bottom line… she said she would have someone pursue this and contact me. That probably won’t happen.

If anyone is ever considering using Network Solutions, I certainly cannot give them a good recommendation.

In the meantime, I need to get this up and running – so I’m using the PHPMAIL option.

If you know of any reason why that is NOT advisable, please let me know. Thanks.

Hmmm … the php mail() solution doesn’t use other mailservers, while smtp does. So probably it works ok, because your webserver is just using it’s own mailservers to send out stuff. Can you try looking in the smtp headers of a received mail to see it was actually send out (not received) by google?

Of course it probably doesn’t matter who’s doing the sending, as long as your client has an account that works for receiving mail.

If I’m understanding this correctly, it was sent by networksolutions – not gmail (see 1st ex. below; 2nd one is a test i sent directly from gmail). Seeing these made me concerned about a ‘reply’ being correctly routed, but I tried it and it works – so I think I’m OK.

Here’s the header of one sent this morning from the site, with PHPMAIL:

    Franky,

Thanks for looking at those headers.

Gmail does display a message within the email it receives for the contact person: ‘This message may not have been sent by:…’, but it gets there – so as you said, I’ll stick with this for now.

If I EVER hear from Network Solutions, I will try the other approach – but I doubt I’ll hear anything. I don’t think sites like this one garner much attention from them, and I can’t really blame them (although sometimes I do).

This is my first experience with a website generating email (in case that wasn’t obvious… :), so I really appreciate your input.

    Nicole
